3DS "Black Screen of Death" Being Reported

Multiple gamers have been reporting that the 3DS is suffering from a crash issue across multiple game titles.  According to posts found on NeoGaf, AVForums, and Digital Spy, the "Black Screen of Death" has been occuring while playing Super Monkey Ball, Street Fighter IV 3D, Pilotwings, Ghost Recon, Lego Star Wars and various Mii applications.

According to the posts, some of the issues can be resolved by resetting the system or reformatting the SD card to FAT-32 format.  Other gamers have had no luck resolving the recurring crashes and have returned their systems for replacement.

We're still too early in the 3DS launch to know how widespread this problem is, but it's definitely alarming.  There's no official word from Nintendo yet on the crashes.

Resident Evil Revival Selection Info

It seems like they're releasing a new HD collection of classic games all the time these days.  They've finally decided to release a Resident Evil collection which will be called 'Resident Evil Revival Selection'.  I don't know much about the game yet, but here's what I do know:

  • It will include versions of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Code: Veronica.  I'm hoping it will actually have a 3rd game, but we probably will not know anything about that in the near future.
  • The game will be multiplatform and released on the Xbox 360 and Sony PS3.
  • Both games will be remastered in wonderful "HD".
  • Move/Kinect support hasn't been mentioned, but would definitely bring some value to the experience.

First Look at Kratos Gameplay in Mortal Kombat

A long time ago, I had a strong fascination with Mortal Kombat.  While my interest has dwindled over the years, I'm definitely starting to get excited about the franchise, particularly after watching the above video.  Mortal Kombat (2011) hits shelves next month and it definitely looks great so far.  Will it be the best "next-gen" fighting option?  I'm not sure about that, but it definitely looks to be the best fighting game option of 2011.  There are some concerns with the game that it's too focuses on being accessible to casual players, but the developer has promised a deep experience that will keep hard-core gamers happy.  I guess we'll just have to see what happens...

Add Me On playfire

I just started using playfire and it's definitely an interesting site that tracks your achievements (Xbox 360) and trophies (PSN).  It's basically a lot like Raptr, but better in my opinion.  If you are on the site, feel free to add me!

New Dead Island Screenshots

Three new Dead Island screenshots have surfaced on the net.  There's nothing too spectacular here, but they are definitely slightly interesting.  Dead Island is scheduled for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.  The game is basically an open-world survival-horror game that I'm definitely excited about.  The game doesn't hit shelves until the end of 2011.  Click on the images for a larger view!

NCAA Football 12 "First Look" Screens

I've been "over" Madden for several years now, but I still look forward to NCAA Football every year.  NCAA Football 12 will be released on July 8, 2011 and so far it looks pretty good.  Two new screenshots were just released showing off the new game.  One screenshot compares NCAA Football 11 to NCAA Football 12 and there's actually a big difference.  The greass in NCAA Football 12 actually looks like real grass.  If these screenshots say anything, we're probably looking at an improved game this year.  NCAA Football 12 will also be headed to PC for the first time in many years.

EA Hints at Nintendo Wii 2...

We all know that Wii sales figures have been drastically down over the past year and that publishers are focusing their efforts on the 360 and PS3.  With that in mind, it should be fairly obvious that Nintendo's next move will be to release a Wii 2 (which should be in HD).  I personally believe that Nintendo will focus their efforts on the 3DS in the near future and we will probably not see a Wii 2 until 2012 or 2013.

"Speaking to IndustryGamers, EA Games label head Frank Gibeau hinted at the fact that Nintendo knows the situation and is working on another platform. "When you look at Nintendo, for a while there, it was all about the Wii being the biggest entertainment platform ever and capturing the mass market, and it faded away. Now, they’re coming back with a second act. I think they know that. They’re very self-aware as an organization and a very powerful brand," he said."

I Won a Copy of Heavy Rain (PS3) from Game Deal Daily

I rarely have good luck when it comes to winning things, but I just won a copy of Heavy Rain (PS3) from Game Deal Daily.  If you haven't checked out their site, you definitely should.  They have a very active forum community that discusses all topics related to gaming and some outside topics.  Each week, they give away 4 video game related items to members of the forum.  In addition to having a really good forum, the site also sells new and used games at pretty good prices.  I'd definitely suggest the site to anyone.

Microsoft Working on Next-Gen Console?

According to G4, it looks like Microsoft could be working on a next-gen console in the near future.  They have placed job ads for the following positions: Graphics Hardware Architect, Senior Architect, and Senior Hardware Verification Engineer.  I assume Microsoft is a long way off from announcing a new console, but we might start hearing things over the next couple of years.  Hopefully Microsoft can learn from mistakes and make a console that isn't a total piece of junk like the Xbox 360.  I definitely enjoy gaming on the 360, but don't enjoy the fact that I'm on my 4th console in less than six years.

Killzone 3 Update On The Way

A fairly big Killzone 3 update is expected to go live later this week.  The patch fixes a bunch of issues with online play and should definitely improve the Killzone 3 experience.  I definitely can't wait for the 1.04 patch to go live.  It will include the following changes:

Network - Lag fixes and fixes for network errors 10002, 8001 and 8013
Gameplay - Players now have more stamina by default. Sprint length is increased but the recharge timer has been adjusted to compensate
Gameplay - Mortally wounded players no longer have collision. Alive players should now be able to traverse the levels without getting stuck on mortally wounded players
Gameplay - Medic’s revive cool-down reduced from 25 to 10 seconds
Gameplay - Increased range from where friendly players can be revived – player can be revived from 20 meters now
Gameplay - Guerrilla Warfare games now last 15 minutes and it takes 100 kills instead of 50 to win

New Screenshots for Dark Souls

New screenshots for Dark Souls have surfaced and they look pretty good.  Dark Souls is the sequel to Demon's Souls and will supposedly be more of a challenge if that's even possible.  Demon's Souls is one of the hardest games out there, so it's hard to believe that they are offering us an even greater challenge.  You can view the full gallery of screenshots HERE.

Dark Souls will not be a PS3 exclusive.  The game will also be available for the Xbox 360 this time around.

Will I ever play Tron: Evolution?

I'm not willing to shell out top price for Tron: Evolution (the game), so I just have to wait for it to become available on GameFly.  I've noticed that it's been in "Low Availability" since the day it came out, so it's either really popular or GameFly didn't order enough copies of the game.  The one thing I've learned it that GameFly will never send me a game that's less than "High Availability".  To be honest, I just want to play the game for the racing aspect, which was my favorite part of the movie.

Last Guardian Demo Possibly Headed to ICO/SotC Collection

The ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection could possibly be coming with a demo for The Last Guardian according to Teach Ico head Fumito Ueda.  I'm rarely excited about demos, but The Last Guardian is a game I've been looking forward to for a while now.  I'm also looking forward to repaying Shadow of the Colossus.  Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the inclusion of this demo looks very possible at this point.

RAGE Screenshots Look Amazing

RAGE is a first-person shooter set to release this September.  There can never bee too many post-apocalyptic games, so this title should be a welcome addition.  Some new screenshots for the game have surfaced and they look great.  Check out the full gallery HERE.

PS3 Releases (March 2011)

March isn't a BIG month for exclusives on the PS3, but there are some really good multi-platform titles hitting shelves and a few exclusives.  March definitely looks to be another good month for gaming on the PS3.  Of all the games hitting the shelves, I am most excited about Dragon Age II and Crysis 2.  Here are the games hitting shelves in March:

  1. Dragon Age II
  2. MLB 2K11
  3. Yakuza 4
  4. Homefront
  5. Top Spin 4
  6. MotorStorm: Apocalypse
  7. Dynasty Warriors 7
  8. Crysis 2
  9. PlayStation Move Heroes
  10. WWE All-Stars
  11. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters
  12. NASCAR 2011
  13. Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed

Sony PSP Gets Price Drop ($129.99)

As expected, Sony announced a price drop for the PSP-3000.  The new price is $129.99, which should probably boost PSP sales in the near future.  I wouldn't be surprised if the DSi gets a price drop in the near future as well.

Along with the good news of a PSP price drop, Sony has also added new games to the Greatest Hits collection ($19.99) and the Favorites collection ($9.99).

Amazon Video Games Deal of the Day

Yesterday's great deal on Halo: Reach is over, but today's "Deal of the Day" isn't a bad one.  They are selling a Hori Xbox 360 Real Arcade Pro. EX for $84.99.  That's $45.00 off the retail price.  This is something any fighting game fan should really consider picking up.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (First In-Game Video)

November 11 can't get here soon enough.  Every day I become more and more excited about Elder Scrolls V.  A new video has surfaced on the net featuring actual gameplay.  The video looks amazing and makes me want the game even more if that's even possible... Video Games Deal of the Day (Halo: Reach)

Amazon has a couple really good deals going on today.  You can pick up Halo: Reach (Legendary Edition) for only $59.99 (regularly $149.99) and Halo: Reach (Limited Edition) for $39.99.   Both are big time deals and definitely worth picking up if you don't have Reach yet.

Battlefield 3 Gameplay Debut Footage Released by EA

Electronic Arts just released new gameplay footage from Battlefield 3.  From what I've seen on the game so far, it looks like we'll be playing a game that's vastly superior to what we find with the Call of Duty series.  Unfortunately, the video on EA's site will not load for me, so I haven't actually seen it yet.

Video Description: "See the first glimpse of in-game footage from Battlefield 3 as a U.S. Marine squad engages hostile PLR forces in Iraqi Kurdistan. Full mission reveal incoming. Stay tuned."

Dreamcast Collection on Shelves

The Dreamcast Collection ($29.99) is now on the shelves.  I actually still use my Dreamcast, so I don't have much use for this collection, but it might be a nice pick-up for gamers out there who don't have (or never had) a Dreamcast with games.  While the collection has some nice games in it, I wouldn't call them the best games from the Dreamcast.  If I made a "Dreamcast Collection" of 4 games, it would include Sonic Adventure 2, Skies of Arcadia, Jet Grind Radio, and SoulCalibur.  We can't always get what we want though.

SEGA of America, Inc. today announced that a packaged compilation of classic titles from SEGA’s popular Dreamcast console has now hit video game retail shelves on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and the PC. The Dreamcast Collection includes the fan favourites Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, SEGA Bass Fishing and Space Channel 5: Part 2. Players will get to enjoy four very different Dreamcast experiences, from hopping behind the steering wheel of Crazy Taxi, to taking things a little slower by luring in their fish before catching them hook, line and sinker with SEGA Bass Fishing. Alternatively, take over as intergalactic news reporter Ulala in Space Channel 5: Part 2 and dance your way past the evil Rhythm Rogues, or make it all about speed in Sonic's first Dreamcast outing, Sonic Adventure! SEGA’s Dreamcast Collection features enhanced graphics for both platforms versions, providing an even more engaging experience. In addition to this, achievements and online leader boards will be available for each game providing a competitive edge and allowing players to prove their skills!

Yakuza 4 - Demo Trailer for PS3

The Yakuza 4 demo on PSN went live today and I can definitely say that this game looks real interesting. Check out the following video showing off the demo trailer:

PlayStation Store Update (February 22)

This week's PlayStation Store Update isn't too exciting for me, but I might pick up a few things.  I'm really tempted to pick up Space Ace, but we'll see how the week goes.  Here's the update from the PlayStation Blog:

Killzone 3: Sharp Shooter A Must Have Accessory

I'm not really big on game accessories, but the PlayStation Move Sharp Shooter looks like a "must have" accessory for anyone who buys Killzone 3.  Unfortunately, the Sharp Shooter is sold out at most retailers and will be pretty hard to find.  The accessory retails for $39.99 which may seem a little steep, but I think it's definitely worth it, especially if you plan to play a lot of Killzone 3.  I haven't tested out K3 with Move controls yet myself, but definitely plan to in the near future.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation Review (Nintendo DS)

Published by: Square Enix
Developed by: ArtePiazza
Genre: RPG
Release Date: US: February 14, 2011
MSRP: $34.99
Rated: T for Teen

Dragon Quest VI is a game I had been waiting a very long time to play.  It was released only in Japan on the Super Famicom back in 1995.  15 years later, they finally decided to localize a western release of the title on the Nintendo DS and I picked it up as soon as I could.  Was the localization worth the effort?  Read on to find out.

Dragon Quest VI is very similar to other Dragon Quest games and will feel extremely familiar to veterans of the franchise.  If you are a fan of JRPG elements like turn-based combat, grinding and random enemy encounters, you'll find all that here.  With that said, the game was a slight letdown and certainly not the best Dragon Quest has to offer.  It's certainly not a bad game, but it wasn't anything stellar to write home about.  One of the reasons I felt letdown may have to do with the fact that I had to wait 15 years to play the game.

Rumor: The Sony NGP Might Remotely Play PS3 Games

There's still a lot of mystery surrounding Sony's NGP (PSP2).  We already know that it's going to be the most powerful portable gaming system ever, but will it be able to play PS3 games remotely?  According to a post on Hold.Start.Select, it might be possible.

If you are connected to Wi-Fi anywhere in the world and your PS3 is on standby at home, you can play the game in your PS3 on your NGP without the disk.

I'd probably file this rumor as extremely unlikely, yet very interesting if something comes out of it.  I'm sure all kinds of rumors will continue to fly until the day we actually have our hands on the NGP.

Rare 1990s Promo Video for Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

I recently came across an interesting rare 1990s promotional video for Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island on YouTube.  Video game commercials and promo videos simply aren't what they once were.  In the 80s and 90s, game commercials were real cheesy and fun in nature.  Enjoy the video!

My Backlog Has Arrived at Demon's Souls

I've been working on my game backlog for a few weeks and it has now arrived at Demon's Souls.  I played a couple hours of it when the game first launched, but ended up moving to other games for some reason.  I now have plenty of time on my hands and am in the mood for a good challenge.  It's been a while since a game really challenged me, so I figured Demon's Souls would be the best route.  I'm not looking forward to the frustration it will cause me, but I am seriously looking forward to beating the game.  I miss the old days when beating a game came with a real sense of accomplishment.  Perhaps this game can bring back the old days for me.  The last time I really felt a real challenge with an RPG was with Unlimited Saga on the PS2.  Unfortunately, Unlimited Saga was a pretty bad game, but I've always heard great things about Demon's Souls.  I also wanted to go ahead and beat the game before Dark Souls hits shelves.

Saints Row 3 Images Leaked on Net

Three images from Saints Row 3 have found their way to the internet.  While the images don't really tell us much, they are definitely interesting.  I'm really looking forward to Saints Row 3, especially since I feel like the series in more interesting than GTA.

Tron Evolution (PS3) Giveaway on Cocktails With Mom

If you still haven't picked up Tron Evolution for the PS3, I just came across an interesting blog that's giving away 5 copies.  Check out the contest HERE.

I've been interested in this game for a while, but it's still in "Low Availabiliy" on GameFly and I don't have the funds to purchase it at this time.  Hopefully I'll win this contest.  I just won a Boba Fett backpack from gamesradar, so maybe my luck is looking up.

I just came across the best Ryu (Street Fighter) cosplay I have ever seen.  Check out the full gallery HERE.

I Could Only Take a Few Hours of Medal of Honor

I finally got around to playing Medal of Honor yesterday and some today.  I wasn't expecting an awesome game, but I definitely expected more.  I could ony take a few hours of Medal of Honor before it really got on my nerves.  The game didn't feel like something from this generation.  The game felt really old, unpolished and annoying.  The textures were poor, teammate animations were clunky and the enemy AI wasn't very intelligent at all.  The environments were also terribly restrictive.  You could rarely move to where it looks like you should be able to.  I didn't play through the entire 6-hour campaign and don't plan to.  This game felt very average in almost every respect.  I played about 2 1/2 hours and that's definitely all I plan to play.  Fortunately, it was just a rental from GameFly and I really need to get it back in the mail to them ASAP.  If I had to give it a score based off my experience, I'd say somewhere in the ballpark of 4/10.  The story was good and the weapons were interesting, but those two factors aren't enough to keep me around for long.

Blizzard Recruiting for Console Diablo III

It looks like the rumors that Diablo III will be coming to consoles is definitely true.  Blizzard recently posted a job listing looking for a Senior Producer to work on "Console Diablo III".  I'm not sure how well Diablo will work on consoles, but it will definitely be interesting...

"Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a highly organized individual with outstanding communications and project management skills for the Diablo team. The ideal candidate has prior experience in console game development and has a keen knowledge of how each discipline operates and interacts. Self-direction and follow-up skills are a must, as well as the ability to anticipate production issues and find effective solutions. The candidate must be fully committed to seeing projects through from inception to completion, and delivering games on time with the highest quality."

Killzone 3 Single Player Demo Impressions

I finally had the chance to sit down and check out the Killzone 3 Single Player Demo and I can say that I'm definitely impressed with what I saw for the most part.  Killzone 2 only kept my attention for about a month after I picked it up, but I'm hoping 3 will keep me interested longer.  I came away from the demo feeling like it will probably be a much better game than what we find in Halo or Call of Duty.  Even with an impressive demo, I'll probably not get the game until it's been out a month or two.  The main reason for that is my game backlog is continually growing and I'm honestly not in a rush to get into Killzone 3.

Here are the main points I came away from the demo with:

  • The graphics are definitely more impressive than the original.  If the entire game looks like the demo, we're looking at a game that will be visually grand.
  • Jetpacks are definitely cool, but I'm not sure how they will be incorporated with multiplayer.  While it's a cool idea, jetpacking in the air is just an easier way to get hit.
  • I ran out of ammo once during the demo and had to rely on melee attacks to get me to the next area.  While fortunate for me, I came away from it feeling like melee attacks are still way too powerful.
  • The enemy AI seemed a little too easy and predictable.  I was hoping for a smarter enemy this time around.
  • Even though the demo was just a short preview, it was a lot of fun and filled with fast-paced action.
  • All in all, the demo leads me to believe that this game will be much better than Killzone 2.  This game might also finally get me to purchase PlayStation Move.

Top 5 Nintendo DS Games (So Far)

The Nintendo DS has been around long enough for its library to become impressive.  There's certainly more bad games than good, but a few DS titles really stand out as excellent games.  I decided to narrow down my favorite gams into a "Top 5" list.  Here are the greatest DS games (so far):

Resistance 3: New Gameplay Video (YouTube)

New gameplay footage from Resistance 3 has surfaced and it looks pretty good.  The person who recorded the video obviously doesn't know how to play well, but it's still a good look at the game.

Mirror's Edge 2 Project Cancelled

Mirror's Edge was a game that didn't have stellar sales, but it was a unique title with a lot of potential.  I was looking forward to an improved Mirror's Edge 2, but Electronic Arts has announced that they are stopping development on the project.  They apparently cancelled the project after early builds of the game were considered "dissappointing" by the company.

Apparently DICE had a small team of people working on Mirror's Edge 2 since November, 2010.  It's a real shame that the prototype wasn't up to snuff.

Halo: Reach 'Defiant Map Pack' Coming in March

For some reason, I haven't been playing Halo: Reach as much as I played past titles in the Halo series.  Even though my interest in Halo has dropped some, I'm still looking forward to playing the new Defiant maps with friends.

The Defiant Map Pack will be available this march for 800 MS Points and will feature three new maps: Condemned, Highlands and Unearthed.  The new map pack will also include an additional 150 Gamerscore for you achievement hunters out there.

Check out Destructoid for the video.

Footage of Crysis 2 Leaked

We all know that an unpolished version of Crysis 2 is all over the net for nefarious gamers to download.  Now leaked footage from the unfinished product has started to surface.  The following 25 minute video tells me that Crysis 2 will definitely be amazing.  If we're looking at an unpolished version, I can't wait to get my hands on the real thing.

Why The Nintendo 3DS Might Fail

It's always tough to predict how well a Nintendo product will do in the market.  I predicted that the originl DS and the Nintendo Wii would be failures and I was obviously wrong about those.  While I think the 3DS might have some initital success (during the first few weeks), something tells me that it will be an overall failure.  Since the 1990s, I've purchased nearly every video game system at launch, but this is one launch I'll be skipping.  In a tough economy, I will be waiting on Sony's NGP and will make the choice between the two then.  Here are the five primary reasons I believe the 3DS might fail:

  1. The original DS was released back in 2004, yet Nintendo continually releases new and better models coaxing many gamers to upgrade after short periods of time.  In less than 7 years, we've seen the DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL and now the 3DS.  That's 5 systems in less than 7 years.  While I'm sure many gamers will pick up the 3DS at launch, I can assume that many gamers like myself will not because they are tired of frequently upgrading.
  2. The PSP 2 aka "Next Generation Portable" has the making of an amazing handheld option.  While the PSP didn't come close to the DS, I think the NGP has a real chance, especially if Sony goes with an affordable pricetag.
  3. So far, I am not impressed with the 3DS launch line-up.  I'm sure the games will get better with time, but it's definitely not looking promising from the start.  It looks like the best game at launch will be Ocarina (which is an awesome game), but I doubt too many people will be excited about playing a dated game that many people already have.
  4. The 3DS has a battery life of 3-5 hours and I'm assuming that's "best case scenario".  The limited battery time is definitely something I'm not very impressed with.
  5. The games might be priced a little high.  It looks like you will be abe to pick up most 3DS titles for around $40, but that's a little steep in this economy.  Many people are already invested in multiple systems and I'm not sure if they are going to bite on the 3DS with these higher prices.

Mario Kart In Real Life

Have you ever wondered what Mario Kart in real life might be like?  The need to wonder is now over.  Check out the following awesome video:

Top Ten RPG Video Games of All-Time

I've spent a good chunk of my life playing RPGs. JRPGs and Western RPGs are certainly my favorite game genres. Before you start complaining about the fact that Fallout 3 and Mass Effect are nowhere to be found on my list, you need to realize that neither game is really an RPG. Both are closer to action and FPS, so that is why I excluded them from my picks.
